We would like to get homeowner and resident feedback on a current local issue. A group of citizens is asking the City of Yelm to allow chickens to be raised in the city limits with sensible limits and regulations, perhaps even a permitting process. Many other local governments in Washington already successfully allow the raising of chickens for food and pets. Since our community is within city limits, what this means is, if the HOA were to also pass changes our rules to allow chickens, that the home next to yours could possibly have chickens in their back yard. The HOA could change the rules to be more restrictive than what the City allows based upon our lot sizes and density. The HOA could also require people wanting to raise chickens to submit to the ACC approval process. Would you like to see the City of Yelm and our HOA allowing the responsible, regulated raising of chickens?

Was this issue resolved within the HOA? I know that on August 15, 2015 Yelm passed Ordinance 1003 and 1004 that allow chickens to be raised in city limits, but was this approved within Nisqually Meadows?

Thank you for your question Cami. Yes, this was approved by the HOA and we are updating our ACC Rules to reflect similar limits and requirements from the Yelm ordinances. A property owner will be required to submit a design review application to the Architectural Control Committee (ACC) with the details to obtain approval.
